Installing cms PrestaShop on a hosting or local server

More about cms PrestaShop

Make sure your hosting / server is PrestaShop compatible:

Server Requirements:

  • System: Unix, Linux или Windows. Unix highly recommended.
  • Web Server: Web Server Apache 2.2 or later, web server Microsoft IIS 6.0 or later and nginx 1.0 or later.
  • We recommend PHP 7.1 or newer.
  • Minimum MySQL 5.0, recommended 5.6 or newer.
  • At least 128 MB of RAM on your server (64 MB is more convenient, the more the better).

PrestaShop will work with PHP 5.1 or newer, but versions below 5.4 have bugs that may prevent some features from working correctly (for example, wrong date timezone).

To run PrestaShop 1.7.x correctly, your PHP installation must have the following settings:

  • magic_quotes_gpc = off.
  • memory_limit = 512М
  • max_execution_time = 300
  • max_input_time = 300
  • upload_max_filesize = 100М
  • post_max_size = 20M
  • max_input_vars = 10000
  • allow_url_fopen = on
  • safe_mode = off.

Using a local server

You can run PrestaShop locally on your computer using a local server. To create a local hosting server, use localhost applications like WAMP, AppServ, XAMP, etc. Any of these can be easily installed like any other program. Use to launch PrestaShop.

Download

To install PrestaShop, you need to download the PrestaShop cms package from the official website: www.prestashop.com/en/downloads

Just enter your name and email address in the fields and click the Download button.

Extracting files

After downloading the PrestaShop cms package, you will need to extract its files and folders from the archive.

This can be done using any archive manager like WinZip (Windows), StuffitExpander (Mac), etc..

Please note: if your hosting control panel has an "Extract" files option, you can use it to extract files directly to your server after uploading the .zip file.

Uploading cms files PrestaShop

If you unpacked the files locally on your computer, you will need to upload them to your hosting server.

This can be done using the hosting control panel file manager or third party FTP Manager applications like FileZilla, TotalCommander, CuteFTP, etc.

Installing cms PrestaShop

When you have finished uploading the files, you can proceed with the installation of the PrestaShop engine. Open your web browser and enter “domain name / path to your PrestaShop directory” in the address bar, then reload the current page. You should see a welcome screen. This is the final step of the installation.

For security purposes, you need to uninstall catalog /install/ on your hosting server.

The sixth step of installing cms PrestaShop

Since version 1.5.4, PrestaShop takes care of renaming the admin folder for you: it becomes the word "admin" followed by 4 random numbers, ie "admin8814". The rename happens as soon as you first get into the "admin" folder: PrestaShop renames it and then correctly accesses the renamed folder.

Log into the PrestaShop back office by going to the newly renamed "admin" folder and start fill the catalog with your data.
